To support schools in creating safe, child-friendly, inclusive, gender-responsive, culturally relevant, and technology-enabled learning environments.

Key Achievements
  • Supported 135 primary schools through infrastructure development and improved learning environments, benefiting over 259,413 students (52% girls).
  • Integrated ICT-enabled learning systems in 18 primary schools.
  • Supported girls’ retention, completion, and transition to tertiary education in 12 secondary schools, benefiting more than 13,350 girls through educational support and advocacy against harmful traditional practices.
  • Trained 1,297 teachers (53% female) through continuous professional development initiatives.
  • Institutionalized the Gender-Safe School Bill in Amhara Region and expanded the initiative to Sidama, Oromia, Tigray, and Afar Regions.
  • Piloted and scaled Green School and Green Community initiatives across 18 primary schools and communities, benefiting over 54,400 students and families.
Approach

ESD implements need-based education quality interventions, including improving school facilities (classrooms, libraries, laboratories, pedagogical resource centers, sports fields, and school compounds). We also enhance the capacity of teachers and school leaders through continuous professional development and leadership training, and support co-curricular activities, child protection, and gender-responsive facilities such as menstrual hygiene management (MHM) rooms and separate WASH facilities.
