Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and Finn Church Aid (FCA) Inaugurate 12 New Classrooms for Refugee-Hosting Schools in Benishangul Gumuz Region
ESD, in collaboration with FCA and with funding from the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland, officially inaugurated and handed over three newly constructed school blocks comprising 12 classrooms in refugee-hosting schools across Assosa Zone, Benishangul Gumuz Regional State.
The classrooms were constructed at Tsore 2 Primary School, Ura Inclusive Secondary School, and Womba Inclusive Secondary School.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by representatives from Refugees and Returnees Service (RRS), United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Regional, Zonal and Woreda government officials, Parent-Teachers Association (PTAs), school communities, refugee and host community representatives, teachers, and students.
Implemented under the Safe, All Inclusive, Friendly Education (SAFE) Project, the construction was completed within three months and the classrooms were fully furnished with student desks, teachers’ tables and chairs, and shelves to create safe and conducive learning environments.
The newly built classrooms will benefit more than 720 students, helping reduce overcrowding and improve access to inclusive and quality education for crisis-affected refugee and host community children.
In addition to infrastructure support, the Project has also provided assistive devices for children with disabilities, menstrual hygiene kits, educational materials, uniforms, sportswear, and support for school clubs and co-curricular activities.
